Guest Speakers: Professor Peter Shepherd - An Overview of Drug Discovery and Development in New Zealand
I am more than delighted to welcome Professor Peter Shepherd as guest speaker to our Bioscience Enterprise Forum.
Google would have you believe that ‘Peter Shepherd’ is a Transformational Psychologist, British Army Doctor and/or the tetartagonist of the 1995 fantasy film, Jumanji. While Peter embodies all the best attributes of the aforementioned, he comes to us next week in his capacity as Professor of Cell Signalling in the University of Auckland’s Molecular Medicine & Pathology department and Honorary, Academic of the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre.
Peter is an alumni of Massey University. He “postdoc-ed” at Harvard and Cambridge before joining the staff of University College London where he was promoted to Professor in 2003. There he became involved in biotechnology and was named London Young Biotechnology Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002.
Since moving back to Auckland in 2004 Peter has continued to focus on research of the signal transduction pathways in the cell and how defects in these lead to the development of cancer and diabetes.
In addition, Peter founded biotechnology company Symansis to develop novel tools for drug discovery, and was co- founder of drug development company Pathway Therapeutics.
Based in Auckland, but engaged in transnational collaborations worldwide, Peter is in a prime position to provide an overview of the translation of science from labs to health outcomes.
We’re very much looking forward to a great function and hope you will join us.
Please RSVP now and we’ll see you on Friday, 1 May.
