An invitation to a University of Auckland Bioscience Enterprise Friday Forum, sponsored by ATEED

Date: Friday, 24th July, 2015
Time: 4:30pm Networking, Presentation 5pm followed by drinks and nibbles.
Venue: SBS Reception Lounge (Common Room), School of Biological Sciences
Guest Speaker:  Tony Dowd, CEO of Nelson-based Supreme Biotechnologies - The Supreme Biotech Story

Supreme Biotech is a private Nelson-based company producing bioactive compounds from micro algae. The company has been established in Nelson, largely because of the support and expertise available at the Cawthron Institute and the Nutrizeal extraction plant near Richmond. As you can see in the photos above, Supreme Biotech's 'plant' has large plastic tubes hang from the ceiling (pictured), filled with algae to produce astaxanthin - an extract said to be nature's most powerful antioxidant. The Cawthron Institute has helped the company develop prototypes, isolating a unique strain of algae, Haematococcus pluvialis, to produce high-quality astaxanthin, suitable for Supreme's purposes.

Tony will speak on the issues the company has had to face and solve (through-out the value chain) and also on what he sees the opportunities ahead to be.
